Cheap Printers

The Sales

Shopping in The Sales

I love shopping even in the sales! But Cheap Printers…!!! What a rip off…cheap they may seem but cheap office printing they are not.

Yes I disclose an interest in that our business is providing low cost office printing. And I am proud of that. What seems unfair is misleading people on cheap printers and the total cost of printing.  Because of the expensive ink cost. Like giving away cheap or free cars with triple priced petrol.

Laser is best with volume

Plus for volumes of over 200 a month, laser is cheaper. It can be more or less dependent on specific work. Yep, for high quality photo type work ink jet is good. And for home short runs ink jet too. But lots of people actually do pretty high volumes at home.

Laser printers can be low price too but again watch out for some suppliers giving them away (or virtually doing so) then charging premium cost per copy. No need to pay more than a few pence a sheet.

Sustainability is about doing something – Climate Change is a given…

Climate Change? Your typical image….
Or should it be:

Two sides of the same coin ie we are destroying the climate with our industry… sometimes. I am a huge supporter of  good industry, don’t get me wrong! What interests me is doing something about growing business sustainabily, quickly and every day. I guess we are lucky in that we sell products that are recyled and save a lot of carbon and money.

The mindset is changing too. It is now not just about a weird idea of re-using for academic reasons. It is because people can see, quite simply, it is cheaper, easier and simpler just to buy what you need.  The joy of new stuff has become a delusion, unless you are very young. All those complicated technologies, HOW TO books, help lines that don’t work!

Life is too short!

You Can’t Drink Oil

According to Recharger Magazine the plastic used in each laser toner cartridge takes 3.5 quarts of oil to produce.

Got me thinking what does a quart look like? I’m not sure but what I do think is any unecessary waste of oil is silly and

costly both to your pocket and the environment.

We’d certainly say it was unnecessary if presented with a quart of oil or even a glass to drink!

you cant drink oil

We just recycle cartridges and printers.  No need to waste any oil.

franking and copier leases

STOP

Why do businesses still keep signing for new equipment when existing or refurbished is lower cost?

Amazing!

When every office is desperate to save a few pennies on consumables but gives away £thousands!!!! on new leases for plastic equipment often unnecessarily….

Example: new printers often produce fewer pages per cartridge than previous models.

Example: franking machines get upgraded (for upgraded read replaced by a salesperson wanting commission), when the customer doesn’t know they could carry on with the present kit.

Yes, I was in that world in sales, but also part of the process to refocus on the customer; but it seems to carry on.

So if you get a call telling you to change your machine. I have a better idea. I will sell you a green printer or a rental piece of kit. Or just stick with what you have got! And see if we can just provide you with some low cost supplies. After all you are the customer…

Green Companies advancing faster than the Melting Polar Ice Caps?

Great News

The Sunday Times Best Green Companies 2009 was encouraging and presents a picture so different from say just five years ago.  Companies of all sizes are represented.  What is really good is the implicit assumption that many readers will know what the criteria mean.

For example Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and Public Reporting but many will not.  So there is a long way to go yet and those ice caps are shrinking fast….

What does it mean to most business people?

It depends upon the sector you work in – unless of course you have a strong moral view in the first place, which in fairness quite a lot of people do.  It also depends who you supply.  So for example the public sector and large private sector organisations especially retailers such as B&Q, M&S and Tescos are very demanding of their suppliers.  This is turn means those businesses need to be demanding of their partners and suppliers.

The best advice we get on a regular basis is from our local experts in the Economic Department of the County Council.  This is the Sustainable Business Partnership who are a best practice – take a look at their website and articles.  An incredibly helpful team led by Stephen Duncan.

Outdoors

Summer And Ensuring We Have Many More

The Maldives

The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) offers The Maldives as one of their corporate events.  Kat there does all kinds of creative stuff: beach cleaning days, a Cool Seas Roadshow with inflatable models of whales, dolphins and turtles…We steer corporate customers to the MCS when they want to reward their staff or set up a team event.

Fast Car Reward Days

Corporate Social Responsibility means companies are much more careful about the rewards they now choose for staff.  Days out for the chaps in fast cars will I guess always have a place (?) but Nature’s Presents is our reaction to the market demand for green gifts and responsible outdoor events.

Sustainability and Marketing

I am a member of an excellent network called the Hampshire Sustainable Business Partnership with companies and organisations attending of all sizes.  I helped them and Business Link put on a workshop recently in Basingstoke advising businesses how to market sustainably.  Mike Warne my colleague and Director from the CIM presented and Mark Stuart gave his usual excellent session as head of Market Research on The Triple Bottom Line - a green marketing issues paper.

Advertising and Green Issues

The ASA and Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) has sent out recently a 12-week public consultation on all aspects of the Advertising Codes.  If you are interested in seeing what they have to say have a look at consultation link 1   consultaion link 2

Here’s to good summer!

A top banker really annoyed me on the radio this morning! He said only Call Centre bank service was now possible for customers and the days of the local “bank manager” which he unfairly caricatured were gone…

His description of local communities sounded something similar to Warmington-on-Sea…but perhaps as an ex Director of a bank he never networks with real people!  And he doesn’t realise it is possible to provide service without the other extreme of a Call Centre only environment.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve done this work myself and so do my family.  It provides part of the solution but as with all good marketing, it’s about the right service for a given person and market.  Not a one-fits-all approach.
And we wonder why we are in a banking mess….? Decisions made from boardrooms in the corporate stratosphere about service are just as far from the mark as packaged toxic waste ie some of the bonds the same banking directors were responsible for…
Gosh I feel better for getting that off my chest!
